Rocket Routine OS vs. Codex

In short: Codex is OpenAI's coding agent, built for engineering teams and included in every ChatGPT plan. The system you lead your company with, you build and run yourself on top of it. In Rocket Routine OS it is there, and its AI agents for development and testing build the software too.

What makes Codex strong

Codex runs in the ChatGPT apps, as a CLI, as an IDE extension, in the cloud and through an SDK. In the cloud, per OpenAI, each task has its own workspace and can continue working while your computer is asleep. OpenAI sells Codex to "enterprise engineering teams" that want to delegate real software work across complex codebases.

The CLI is open source under Apache 2.0, currently version 0.167.0 of 6 November 2026. Skills package instructions and resources for a task, plugins bundle skills and MCP servers, and an AGENTS.md file holds what Codex reads before doing any work. Codex works with VS Code, Cursor and Windsurf.

Governance: where it stands today

Codex runs commands inside a constrained environment instead of with full access by default. There are the modes "Ask for approval", "Approve for me" and "Full access", and OpenAI recommends starting with "Ask for approval". The workspace has roles and Codex-specific permissions, the Compliance API gives auditable records on Enterprise, and local runs emit OpenTelemetry events.

What still holds: these rules govern what a coding agent may do on a machine or in a repository. On the OpenAI pages we read, we found no decision rules for a whole company and no check of work by a person against a definition of done.

What that costs you in practice

Codex is part of every ChatGPT plan, limited on Free. More usage comes with Plus at $20 a month or ChatGPT Business at $20 per user a month billed annually, from 2 users, or $25 monthly. Pro costs $100, $200 or $500 a month. With an API key you pay as you go. Prices in USD as shown on OpenAI's pages, as of 8 November 2026.

On Plus and Business, messages per five hours are limited, depending on the model, and weekly limits may also apply. Starting in December, per OpenAI, ChatGPT and Codex share one usage limit.

Building software in Rocket Routine OS

You build software in Rocket Routine OS too: AI agents for development and testing write the code, test it and take it through to delivery, from a small tool to a large system, end to end, with you in charge. The VP Engineering, the AI agent for that area, leads the development.

When code touches pricing logic, approvals or customer communication, the same model applies as for any other work in the company: the adoption level sets what an AI agent may do alone. Before deleting and on decisions of principle it always asks, and a person checks work that needs a check against the definition of done.

Why not just build it yourself with Codex?

Many try exactly that: with Codex you build something fast, a script, an analysis, a small tool. The system you lead your company with, you then build yourself: goals linked to a plan, a meeting rhythm, decision rights, an adoption level for each AI agent, a person's check against a definition of done, and an AI head for every area, an AI agent that leads it. And you run all of it next to your actual job: you adapt it when something changes and fix it when something breaks.

In Rocket Routine OS, that system is there. You set it up in a chat with the Navigator, in about 20 to 30 minutes. Then the meeting rhythm from Daily to Annual and the AI heads for all ten areas are running. Yearly plan, goals, numbers, meetings and work sit in one place.

The AI costs money either way. Beyond the limited Free use, Codex costs from $20 a month, or you pay API usage as you go. Rocket Routine OS works with your own AI: during set-up you connect your own account as your AI, for example Claude or OpenAI, and from then on your own AI does the work. So the difference lies elsewhere: whether you build and run the system for your company yourself, or whether it is there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Rocket Routine OS or Codex?

Codex writes, tests and ships code. In Rocket Routine OS, the AI agents for development and testing do that, as part of the operating system for the whole company: you set what each AI agent may do alone. Codex itself runs separately from Rocket Routine OS. The ChatGPT account you use Codex with can, however, be the AI that Rocket Routine OS runs on.

Why pay for Rocket Routine OS when I can build everything myself with Codex?

With Codex you build tools, and anything beyond the limited Free use costs money. The system you lead your company with, you would build and run yourself: goals, a meeting rhythm, decision rights, an adoption level for each AI agent, the check against a definition of done, and an AI head for every area. In Rocket Routine OS it is there, set up in a chat in about 20 to 30 minutes. Its AI agents for development and testing build the software too, and the AI runs there on your own account, for example Claude or OpenAI.

Is Codex free?

Codex is included in every ChatGPT plan, limited on Free. Plus costs $20 a month, ChatGPT Business $20 per user a month billed annually. With an API key you pay as you go. The CLI is open source under Apache 2.0; the IDE extension and Codex Cloud are not. As of 8 November 2026.

How secure is Codex?

Codex runs commands inside a constrained environment, and OpenAI recommends the "Ask for approval" mode. Per its own page, OpenAI does not train on enterprise data by default, and the Compliance API gives auditable records on Enterprise.

What is the difference between Codex and ChatGPT Work?

Per OpenAI, the two share one agent base. Codex works on software, ChatGPT Work on docs, decks and spreadsheets. Starting in December they share one usage limit.
