Rocket Routine OS vs. Hermes Agent
In short: Hermes Agent by Nous Research is a self-hosted personal agent that writes and improves its own skills from experience. Rocket Routine OS is a separate system for the whole company: an agent acts with the rights of the person who asked, asks before deleting, and nothing leaves the company without your yes. Hermes Agent's software is free. With it, you build, secure and run the system for your company yourself. In Rocket Routine OS it is there.
What makes Hermes Agent strong
Hermes Agent is the open-source project of Nous Research, under the MIT licence. As of 7 November 2026: version 0.23.0 and 261,441 GitHub stars. There is no official user count. The agent runs continuously, remembers across sessions, and works from chat apps, the terminal or a desktop app. You choose the model, from Nous Portal and OpenRouter to your own endpoint or a local model.
The main idea is learning. Hermes Agent creates its own skills from experience and improves them in use. It keeps memories in two small files that it writes itself, and it can search past conversations. Per Nous, there is no telemetry: calls go only to the model provider you chose, and the data stays on your machine. If you come from OpenClaw, you can import settings, memories and skills.
Security and governance: where it stands today
Nous's security policy is open about it: "The only security boundary against an adversarial LLM is the operating system." The approval gate for dangerous commands, redaction and the Skills Guard are called heuristics there, "not boundaries". By default, commands run directly on the host. Docker, SSH and other backends are available. Among authorized users, the policy treats all callers as equally trusted, and for separation you run separate instances. Skills execute arbitrary Python at import time, and plugins run with full agent privileges.
There is protection all the same. In the default mode, a helper model judges dangerous commands, no answer within 300 seconds means the command is denied, and scheduled jobs deny dangerous commands by default. --yolo switches all checks off. The NVD lists 39 records for hermes-agent from April to September 2026 (8 high, 29 medium, 2 low; as of 7 November 2026). That is a count of published records, not of open holes.
What that costs you in practice
Hermes Agent changes its own skills. That is its value, and it is the question a company has to ask: who checks what the agent learned before it flows into the next task? With hermes curator lock you stop the agent rewriting a skill you curated. With /goal, Hermes Agent judges for itself whether an answer meets the goal. We found no check by a person against a definition of done in the docs.
The agent itself is free, and you pay your model provider. A Nous Portal subscription is optional: Free $0, Plus $20, Super $100, Ultra $200 per month (as of 7 November 2026). Paid plans include one Cloud agent up to a set size, and inference and tool use bill on top.
Who Hermes Agent is built for
The open-source project is built for one person. Nous calls it "a single-tenant personal agent". It is built for people who want a personal agent that runs continuously and keeps learning, and who take on the hardening themselves.
For teams, Nous sells Hermes Business: hosted, one agent per team member, a shared skill library, one credit balance and spend caps per member. Owners and admins manage roles, caps and API keys, and data sits in an isolated tenant per team on Nous infrastructure. Hermes Enterprise runs on-prem or in a private cloud, with SSO, SLAs and white-glove onboarding. Nous gives no public price for either. These roles and caps govern people and money. We found no rules there for what an agent may decide, and the page does not mention audit logs or approvals.
In Rocket Routine OS, its own AI agents do the work of a team and a company, like the weekly finance report. You set the adoption level for each AI agent, and the work runs in the same place as your goals, decisions and work items.
Hermes Agent is free. Why pay for Rocket Routine OS?
Hermes Agent's software is free and open source. You bring your own model access, typically a paid API or subscription. Rocket Routine OS also works with your own AI: during set-up you connect your own account as your AI, for example Claude or OpenAI, and from then on your own AI does the work. So the difference lies elsewhere: whether you build and run the system for your company yourself, or whether it is there.
With Hermes Agent you get a personal agent for one person. Securing it is your job: per Nous, the operating system is the only security boundary, and by default commands run directly on the host. The system you lead your company with, you build next to it yourself as well: goals linked to a plan, a meeting rhythm, decision rights, an adoption level for each AI agent, a person's check against a definition of done, and an AI head for every area, an AI agent that leads it. And you run all of it next to your actual job: you adapt it when something changes and fix it when something breaks.
In Rocket Routine OS that system is there. You set it up in a chat with the Navigator, in about 20 to 30 minutes. Then the meeting rhythm from Daily to Annual and the AI heads for all ten areas are running. An AI agent acts with exactly the rights of the person who asked, and you set the adoption level for each one. It asks before deleting and before changing the company's direction, and nothing leaves the company without your yes. A person checks work that needs a check against the definition of done. Learning is built in too: learnings come out of routines and meetings, and a person accepts or discards them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Rocket Routine OS or Hermes Agent?
Hermes Agent is a self-hosted personal agent that writes its own skills. Rocket Routine OS is the operating system for the whole company, with its own AI agents, and you set what each one may do alone.
Hermes Agent is free. Why should I pay for Rocket Routine OS?
The software is free, and you bring your own model access, usually paid. Rocket Routine OS also works with your own account, for example Claude or OpenAI. The difference: Hermes Agent gives you a personal agent that you secure yourself, and you build and run the system for your company next to it. In Rocket Routine OS that system is there: goals, a meeting rhythm, decision rights, an adoption level for each AI agent, the check against a definition of done, and AI heads for ten areas, set up in a chat in about 20 to 30 minutes.
Is Hermes Agent suitable for companies?
The open-source project describes itself as a personal agent for one user. For teams, Nous sells Hermes Business (hosted) and Hermes Enterprise (on-prem or private cloud, with SSO). We found no rules in these offers for what an agent may decide.
How secure is Hermes Agent?
Per Nous, the operating system is the only security boundary against an adversarial model. By default, commands run directly on the host. The approval gate for dangerous commands helps, but Nous calls it a heuristic. For separation, you run separate instances or choose a sandbox.
What is the difference between Hermes Agent and OpenClaw?
Both are self-hosted personal agents. Hermes Agent puts learning at the centre: it writes and improves its own skills. On GitHub, OpenClaw leads (394,129 to 261,441 stars); in the OpenRouter ranking, Hermes Agent leads (#1 to #6, opt-in apps only). As of 7 November 2026.
Can I combine Hermes Agent and Rocket Routine OS?
Next to each other, yes, as separate tools. There is no connection: Hermes Agent does not run under Rocket Routine OS.
